1949 Lustron in Temple Hills – $185K
The gray 3/2 Lustron pictured on the left is for sale at $185,000. As you can see from the listing, there is no mention that it is a Lustron. It’s located here next to a blue one. Between 1949 and 1950, Chicago industrialist and inventor Carl Strandlund’s Lustron Corporation built an estimated 2,680 of these modest mid-century prefab steel houses with porcelain-enamel-coated panels to help house returning soldiers and their families after World War II. Poor decisions by Strandlund and politics eventually led to the the failure of the Lustron t0 be accepted on a larger scale. Read a concise history here.
