1954 Custom Mid-Century in Somerset – $1.049 Million
I was intrigued when I saw this description for a new mid-century listing in Somerset in Chevy Chase: “Mid-Century Cool in the Town of Somerset. Custom designed by a rocket scientist with all the exuberance and whimsy of the 1950s.” The rocket scientist in question was Vahey S. Kupelian, an aeronautical engineer who would served as the deputy undersecretary of defense for strategic and theater nuclear forces. He designed this for his family. He passed away in 1988.
The kitchen and two main-level baths are vintage while the basement has vintage tile with shuffleboard court. The living room has a nice wall of glass looking out to the private backyard. You can see images here. It will be interesting to see what happens to this one. Many older homes in the neighborhood have been replaced with new, larger traditional-style homes. The neighborhood still does have some mid-century modern homes and some newer moderns but how long will they last?
The house, listed for $1.049 million, is open Sunday, June 17 from 1 to 4 p.m.
