1962 Goodman Townhome in River Park – $329K

River Park

This new listing for a flat-roof mid-century modern townhouse by Charles Goodman in River Park is the lowest priced of the six Goodman’s I see on the market. I know Goodman was influenced by the work of Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, but I have never seen a direct connection between Mies’ Lafayette Park in Detroit, which was built in the late 1950s, and River Park in Southwest.  Both have a mix of townhomes and high-rise buildings. (Goodman also built a townhome complex in Reston known as Hickory Cluster.) While I have never been to Lafayette Park, the images I have seen of the neighborhood correspond to the general feeling of River Park, although Lafayette Park looks to be a bit lusher in terms of greenery. I think a research trip is in order. If you can’t make it to Detroit, make sure not to miss these interesting interviews the New York Times did in October with various residents (modernists and non-modernists) of Lafayette Park.
