Co-ops For Sale in Goodman’s River Park

As part of southwest Washington’s urban renewal efforts in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Charles Goodman’s firm designed River Park, a cooperative housing project built by the Reynolds Aluminum Corporation. Goodman’s team–using aluminum as the key material–designed 134 townhomes and a large high-rise apartment building, built in 1962.

Here’s how architectural historian expert Elizabeth Jo Lampl describes Goodman’s work on the apartment building: “Perhaps his most Miesian work, Goodman’s high-rise apartment block at River Park is raised on pilotis and is a purely functionalist expression, except for the stamped grillwork at the balconies. These elements create an ever-changing pattern of sun and shadow.”
