Barrel-Roof Goodman in River Park
This rarely available barrel-roof townhouse with sunken garden level by Charles M. Goodman is located in the mid-century modern enclave of River Park along the Southwest waterfront. Located just down the block from the Waterfront Metro Station and minutes from the redeveloped Wharf and booming Navy Yard area, River Park is a gated community on 11 park-like acres with swimming pool, tot lot and gym.
As part of Southwest Washington’s urban renewal efforts in the late 1950s and early 1960s, Goodman’s firm designed River Park, a cooperative housing project of townhomes and an apartment-style block built by the Reynolds Aluminum Corporation as a way to showcase aluminum as a building material. River Park has been highlighted by the likes of The Washington Post, which in addition to calling it “unmistakable,” wrote that “to live under a barrel roof in Southwest is to live in a building of some historical import.”
The New York Times featured the River Park shortly after it was built on the front page of the newspaper, calling the community a “fresh design outlook.”
Brought back to life with modernist details throughout by the current owners, the 3 bedroom/2 full bathroom townhouse includes an additional bonus room in the lower level plus a second kitchen, perfect for entertaining or guests.
While updated with modernist lighting by Tom Dixon and Schoolhouse, new electrical outlets and faceplates, Kohler towel racks and medicine cabinets, the home still retains some original touches, including parquet flooring and exterior aluminum grillwork. The owners restored Goodman’s dramatic floating stairway and modernist railing.
The main floor includes the kitchen and open dining-living room with wall of glass sliders opening to a balcony with new protective awning. The kitchen features updated cork flooring, marble back splash and cabinets painted with artisanal and eco-friendly Farrow and Ball paint.
The top level includes two bedrooms and full bathroom. The walls of glass on the main and upper level have been tinted to reduce impact of sunlight. The garden level is fully finished with additional bedroom that opens to the landscaped garden area with wisteria planters, rare bonus room, full bathroom and second kitchen. The entire level was redone with mid-century appropriate cork flooring, updated closet doors and custom blinds.
River Park is conveniently located to all the major highways — 395, 295, Route 1, and the George Washington Memorial Parkway, and with easy access to Georgetown and Capitol Hill. IN addition to the Metro, within one block you will find Safeway, CVS, an organic cleaner, restaurants, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, a Capital Bikeshare station, the MarketSW (open from spring to fall), and the Southwest DC Community Farmers Market (open from spring to fall).
Within just a few blocks you can enjoy one of the most dynamic parts of the city, including Arena Stage, the restaurants and music venues of The Wharf, the brand new Audi Field (the home soccer stadium for D.C. United), Nationals Park, The Yards Park, a public library, schools, churches, parks, the Southwest Heritage Trail, marinas, cruise boats, and water taxis. River Park is also within walking distance to the National Mall, Smithsonian Institution museums, the Capitol, the Tidal Basin, and L’Enfant Plaza as well as the annual Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival, which concludes the National Cherry Blossom Festival.
