Deck House on 5 Private Acres
This secluded, 5-acre lot in Moyaone Reserve seems like it was created for a Deck House. The 1975 mid-century modern post-and-beam design featuring exposed Douglas fir beams and tongue-and-groove vaulted ceilings is at home in the heavily wooded landscape close to the Potomac River. During the winter, when the leaves fall, you can see the sun set over the river from much of the house as well as the deck.
The two-level 2,118 square-foot home has three bedrooms, two full bathrooms and has been recently renovated by the current owners. One of the major renovations is the new no-maintenance ipe (Brazilian walnut) wrap around deck with custom copper modernist railings.
The upper level includes the open living-dining room, kitchen, and master suite. The lower level includes two additional bedrooms, the second full bathroom, walk out family room, and utility/laundry room.
The open living-dining room features walls of glass, vaulted, beamed ceilings and new, solid teak wood flooring. Built-in bookshelves with attached library ladder and prominent brick wall with wood-burning stove complete the space.
The kitchen features large windows, new stainless steel appliances and granite countertops.
The upstairs master bedroom suite has a renovated bathroom, including custom teak cabinets, marble countertop, newly European-tiled shower, and marble floor. The lower level has new ceramic flooring and updated bathroom.
The separate garage, with space for two cars, has been rebuilt and has a 1-year old roof and large cedar storage area. The roof on the house is also 1-year old.
This lot, bordered on two sides by Piscataway National Park lands, is one of the most beautiful within the Moyaone Reserve. A wooded path from the backyard is an easy walk—with direct access— to the Potomac River through Piscataway Park. Bald eagles, eastern bluebirds, humming birds, owls, and many songbirds are regular visitors to the yard.
The company, still in existence as Acorn Deck House, describes the design this way: “Deck House offers an efficient post and beam building system with exposed structure, making a powerful statement of beauty, strength and function. Floor to ceiling glass frames connect with the natural environment to create a feeling of living in the outdoors. Interior spaces flow freely, accented by a rich combination of natural woods. Deck House is a quiet statement about one’s own self-confidence – a home of relaxed elegance in perfect harmony with the natural world, inside and out.”
Moyaone Reserve is a special neighborhood in Accokeek, MD, just 20 miles south of Capitol Hill. The heavily wooded community of 180 homes is situated along the Potomac River contiguous to Piscataway National Park, home of the National Colonial Farm, and to The Hard Bargain Farm, an environmental education center. The homes in the community–many are mid-century modern and contemporary styles–were first built after World War II by the likes of architects Charles Wagner and Charles Goodman. All the lots in the community are five acres or more and are protected by federal scenic easements to protect the view shed from Mt. Vernon, just across the Potomac River.
The Moyaone Reserve offers a community center, pool and outside BBQ/grilling and gathering area. Many community events are hosted here throughout the year. Residents who pay the optional annual fee of $650 per year are entitled to one private event at the community center and have full access to the pool throughout the swimming season (Memorial Day through Labor Day).
