Sold: My Listing: Rare Custom Goodman in Hollin Hills – $900K
(This house was listed for $899K and sold for $900K in just over a week.) Here’s my new listing that just hit the market. One of only five custom homes by leading D.C. modernist Charles Goodman in his award-winning community of Hollin Hills, this 3 bedroom/2 bathroom home has never been publicly listed for sale. The home was originally designed by Goodman in 1950-51 for Dr. and Mrs. Marcus Goldman.
The nearly 3,000 square-foot bi-nuclear home (public and private spaces separated by a “core” slate-floor entrance and kitchen) features a sophisticated combination of upscale and extensive modern updates with vintage mid-century details, such as rare wormy chestnut paneling, salvaged bricks from Baltimore, plaster walls and a butterfly roof. In fact, the house has three modernist roof lines: the butterfly over the bedrooms, a flat roof over the core and shed, which has soaring and extended eaves to allow sun into the glass-walled living room during the winter and block the rays during the summer.
Expanded by architect Casper Neer in the early 1960s, the home has been sensitively updated during the past few years by the current owners (only the third). They created a master suite including a high-end bathroom with heated floors and two-person walk-in closet.
In addition to the master suite, which features a fireplace, the home has two additional generously sized bedrooms, including a large, glass-walled room with custom built-in bookshelves that could also serve as an office/library/studio. There is extensive storage throughout the house and in the carport.
The home’s expansive public spaces, including flagstone-floored den and large eat-in kitchen, which both have wood ceilings and access to the patio and wrap-around deck, are excellent for entertaining.
The highlight of the home is the open living/dining room (pictured at top and above) featuring a second fireplace and a south-facing 25-foot expanse of floor-to-ceiling glass. The kitchen has vintage steel St. Charles cabinets, used by the leading modern architects, including Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies van der Rohe.
The home is set on a private and lush .62 acre hilltop lot featuring mature plantings, including magnolias, boxwoods, white pine, azaleas, Japanese maples, hydrangeas. A wrap around deck allows you take in the large, fenced-in lot, which also features a bluestone patio. A dramatic driveway and carport allow for plenty of guests at your mid-century mod parties and protection of cars during the winter months.
Hollin Hills, comprised of 450 modernist homes with 30 acres of parkland and a pool and tennis club, is just 5 miles south of Old Town Alexandria, less than 10 to National Airport and 13 to Capitol Hill.
