My New Listing: Custom Mid-Century on Private ½ Acre Lot – $469K
Here is my latest listing. I will be holding an open house this Sunday (Sept. 20) from 1 to 4 pm. Sited on a private and peaceful .55 acre lot, this custom 3 bedroom, 2 full bathroom vintage mid-century modern home is located just north of the Beltway in the well-established Hillandale neighborhood of Silver Spring that features a variety of custom homes on large lots. While the house enjoys a serene setting, Starbucks and other shopping is less than a .5 mile walk away. Here is the full slideshow.
The 1950 two-level home was designed by Francis Donald Lethbridge, one of D.C.’s leading residential modern architects. Lethbridge designed the award-winning suburban communities including Carderock Springs, Holmes Run Acres and Pine Spring. He also designed Arlington National Cemetery’s visitors center, the River Road Unitarian Church and the U.S. chancery in Lima, Peru.
The front door, designed at a slight angle to create visual interest, hints at the modernist space inside. The home’s original wood floors and walls mix with newly installed engineered wood in the entrance. The entire home, inside and out, has been recently painted.
The central focus of the nearly 2,000 square foot home is the large living room with wood floors, large brick fireplace with built in wood shelves and walls of glass overlooking the backyard.
The kitchen and dining area, just off the entrance and living room, are separated with a vintage sliding panel pass through that connects the two spaces. The dining room features a vintage mid-century globe light, art nook and small desk area with cabinets. The kitchen has updated cabinets, countertops, including a section of wood block, and updated range and refrigerator. The stainless steel sink surround is vintage. You can access a side sitting porch through the kitchen.
The rest of the main level includes the three bedrooms and the main bathroom with large vintage vanity/sink and separate toilet and shower/tub area. The master bedroom is tucked into the back corner of the house and has two closets. The two smaller bedrooms feature wood walls and Scan shelving and hanging desk unit.
The lower-level includes a large family area with second fireplace, storage space and larger laundry area with the second bathroom that can be converted into a bedroom or office space.
The lower level leads out to an expansive concrete and brick patio to enjoy the private lot with mature trees and azaleas.
Located just outside the Beltway, the home is a .5 mile walk to the shops and restaurants of Hillandale Shopping Center and is just 1 mile south of the FDA White Oak campus. The house is less than 4 miles to the University of Maryland and less than 5 miles to the Forest Glen Metro Station.
