The MCM Prospect House in Rosslyn

Prospect House

After helping a client sell her house in Hollin Hills several years ago, she went overseas for work. Coming back to the States, she wanted to find a mid-century modern condo that had a similar feel to Charles Goodman’s Hollin Hills. This was was not an easy task, but we found the right spot in the Prospect House  in Rosslyn.

Designed by Donald Hudson Drayer in 1963 and completed in 1965, the building was built on a hilltop directly across the Potomac from the Mall. The 11-story condo, highlighted in James M. Goode’s book Best Addresses, has stunning views of the monuments from many of the 268 units, a perfect spot for viewing fireworks on July 4th. Many of the units are walk-downs, where a short staircase brings you down from the hallway level to a double height living room with 13-ft ceilings and a wall of glass looking toward the Mall. In 1966, the Top O’The Town restaurant was opened on the top floor. Today, it is a reception and conference facility. The annual Prospect House holiday party is held in the space.

One of the best parts of the building is the well-preserved  lobby, from the folded-concrete porte-cochere to the original stone and wood. The front desk even has its original working switchboard, which may have seen its last days. Plans to remove it created quite a stir among residents that a committee has been formed to study the situation.
